Introduction
Oura is the official companion application for the Oura Ring, the award-winning smart ring that measures your body's signals directly from your finger — the most accurate location for reading biometric data. Unlike traditional fitness wristbands, the Oura Ring is a lightweight, titanium ring that you wear day and night, syncing over 30 continuous biometrics to the Oura app where they are transformed into three daily scores: Sleep, Readiness, and Activity.
Founded in 2013 in Oulu, Finland, Oura Health has shipped millions of rings worldwide, earning a 4.9-star rating on the App Store (187K+ ratings) and a 4.7-star rating on Google Play (29.7K+ reviews). The company has been worn by athletes, executives, doctors, and NASA astronauts — making it one of the most clinically studied consumer wearables on the market.
How the Oura App Works
The Oura Ring captures physiological data continuously from the arteries in your finger — including heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), blood oxygen (SpO₂), skin temperature, and motion — using infrared PPG sensors, a 3D accelerometer, and a temperature sensor. Data syncs to the Oura app via Bluetooth every time you open it (or automatically in the background), where proprietary algorithms convert raw sensor data into three easy-to-understand daily scores from 1 to 100:
Sleep Score — analyzes total sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep stages (light, deep, REM, awake), latency, restfulness, and timing relative to your chronotype. A visual hypnogram shows exactly when you moved in and out of each sleep stage throughout the night.
Readiness Score — a composite of sleep balance, HRV balance, resting heart rate, previous day activity, body temperature deviation, and recovery index. Your Readiness Score tells you how ready your body is to handle physical and mental stress, with actionable guidance like "optimal for high-intensity training" or "prioritize rest today."
Activity Score — measures daily movement through steps, active calories, activity minutes, inactive time, and training volume. Oura uniquely emphasizes balance over maximalism: it encourages rest when your Readiness is low rather than pushing you to always do more.

The Oura app is the companion application for the Oura Ring, a smart ring that measures your body's signals from your finger — the most accurate location for continuous biometric sensing. The ring uses infrared PPG sensors, a 3D accelerometer, a NTC temperature sensor, and red LED sensors to capture heart rate, HRV, blood oxygen (SpO₂), skin temperature, and motion data continuously. This data syncs via Bluetooth to the Oura app, which processes it into three daily scores from 1 to 100: Sleep Score (how well you slept), Readiness Score (how prepared your body is for the day), and Activity Score (how balanced your movement was). The app also surfaces long-term trends, behavioral correlations via the Tag system, Cycle Insights for menstrual health, illness detection signals, and stress resilience tracking. An Oura Membership ($5.99/month in the US) is required to access full insights; a free trial month is included when you first pair the ring.
Is the Oura Ring worth it?
Whether the Oura Ring is worth it depends on what you value. Oura excels at three things: best-in-class sleep analysis, recovery-guided training optimization, and discreet 24/7 wear. Peer-reviewed research has confirmed Oura's accuracy in measuring sleep stages, HRV, resting heart rate, and body temperature. Users frequently report meaningful behavior changes — sleeping more consistently, training smarter based on Readiness, and catching illness early. However, there are trade-offs: Oura does not have a screen or GPS, cannot display notifications, and requires a $5.99/month membership after a free trial. The ring hardware costs $299–$549 depending on style. If you prioritize sleep quality, recovery insights, and discreet wearable design over smartwatch features, Oura Ring 4 is one of the best wearables available. If you want GPS for workouts, a screen for daily use, or message notifications, an Apple Watch or Garmin may be a better fit.
Are Oura rings waterproof?
Yes. The Oura Ring 4 and Oura Ring 3 are both rated IP68, meaning they are waterproof up to 100 meters. You can safely wear your Oura Ring while swimming in pools or the ocean, showering, bathing, surfing, or using a sauna. The ring is designed for 24/7 wear including all water-based activities. The magnetic charging dock is not waterproof, but the ring itself withstands submersion without any issues. This is one of Oura Ring's key advantages over chest straps and some other wearables — you never need to remove it.
Can the Oura Ring measure blood pressure?
The Oura Ring does not currently measure blood pressure. Unlike WHOOP MG (which offers experimental Blood Pressure Insights via optical sensor technology), Oura has not released a blood pressure feature as of March 2026. Oura does monitor cardiovascular indicators such as resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen (SpO₂) — which are related to cardiovascular health — but these are not direct blood pressure measurements. If blood pressure monitoring is a priority, you would need a dedicated device (sphygmomanometer, some smartwatches, or Samsung Galaxy Watch with BioActive sensor) rather than the Oura Ring.
Can the Oura Ring detect AFib?
The Oura Ring cannot currently perform an ECG (electrocardiogram) or provide an FDA-cleared AFib detection feature. Oura monitors heart rate and HRV continuously, and irregularities in heart rhythm patterns may be visible in these metrics, but the app does not generate an AFib diagnosis or alert. For FDA-cleared AFib detection from a wearable, look at the Apple Watch Series 4+ (requires ECG app), WHOOP MG (FDA-cleared ECG), or Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra with ECG. Oura has indicated interest in cardiovascular health features, but AFib detection requires a different sensor (ECG electrode) that is not present in the current Oura Ring hardware.
How much does the Oura membership cost?
Oura Membership pricing (as of March 2026): United States — $5.99/month or $69.99/year (before tax); European Union — €5.99/month or €69.99/year (after tax); United Kingdom — £5.99/month; Australia — $9.99 AUD/month. New members receive one complimentary month of membership starting when the ring is first paired. Membership is tied to your Oura account (email), not to a specific ring — switching to a newer ring doesn't require a new subscription. Without an active membership, the ring still tracks basic step count and you can view limited historical data, but Readiness Score, Sleep Score, Activity Score, and all advanced insights are locked. The ring hardware is purchased separately: Oura Ring 4 starts at $349 USD.
Can the Oura Ring track steps?
Yes, the Oura Ring tracks step count using its built-in 3D accelerometer. Step data is displayed in the Activity section of the Oura app alongside active calories, activity minutes, and inactive time. The Oura Ring uses a finger-worn accelerometer, which has a different motion profile than wrist-based trackers — accuracy is generally good for walking and running but may differ slightly from wrist-worn devices for activities that involve arm-less movement (like cycling). Oura's step counting is validated in peer-reviewed research as comparable to clinical-grade pedometers for walking. Steps can also sync bidirectionally with Apple Health on iOS.
Can the Oura Ring detect sleep apnea?
The Oura Ring is not a medical device and cannot diagnose sleep apnea. However, it does monitor blood oxygen (SpO₂) during sleep — low or fluctuating overnight SpO₂ levels are a potential indicator of sleep-disordered breathing. Oura also tracks respiratory rate and restlessness patterns that may be associated with sleep apnea. If your Oura Ring consistently shows low SpO₂ levels (below 90%), elevated respiratory rate, or very poor sleep quality scores despite adequate time in bed, these signals may prompt you to consult a healthcare provider for formal sleep apnea testing (polysomnography). For clinical sleep apnea diagnosis, you need a medically certified sleep study, not a consumer wearable.
Is the Oura Ring HSA or FSA eligible?
The Oura Ring is generally not HSA/FSA eligible as a standard wellness wearable. However, in some specific circumstances — such as when prescribed by a physician to monitor a medical condition — it may qualify for FSA reimbursement with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). Starting in 2020, the IRS expanded HSA/FSA eligibility to include some health monitoring devices, and some users have successfully submitted Oura Ring purchases through FSA with a doctor's prescription. Rules vary by plan administrator. WHOOP, by contrast, has officially partnered with certain FSA/HSA administrators to offer pre-approved eligibility. We recommend contacting your benefits administrator directly to confirm current eligibility before purchasing for FSA/HSA reimbursement.
Oura Ring vs WHOOP — which is better?
Oura Ring and WHOOP target overlapping but distinct use cases. Oura Ring (ring form factor) excels at comprehensive sleep analysis, readiness-based recovery, women's health tracking (cycle insights), and all-day comfort as a discreet piece of jewelry. WHOOP (band form factor) excels at real-time workout strain tracking (0–21 Strain Score), athletic performance coaching via AI, and longevity features (Healthspan, WHOOP Age). Key differences: Oura has a lower subscription cost ($5.99/month vs $199–$359/year for WHOOP); WHOOP's subscription bundles the hardware. Oura's ring is more discreet and comfortable for sleep; WHOOP's band stays on during heavy lifting and contact sports where rings must be removed for safety. Sleep tracking quality is comparable between the two. Choose Oura if you prioritize sleep insights, women's health, and discreet design. Choose WHOOP if you want real-time strain coaching, dedicated athletic performance metrics, and AI-powered coaching.

So going into using this ring, I was a skeptic to say the least. However I got the chance to use this for 3 months in a clinical trial at MIT and I was pleasantly disappointed! It allows you to set the goals that are most important to you. It helped me value recovery and rest just as much as activity. I workout today about half as much as I used to and I honestly haven't ever felt happier or healthier.

I don't typically write reviews on apps, but had to for my Oura. I've had mine for just over a year and have loved it. I chose the Oura because I have an analog watch and didn't want another thing on my wrist. The accuracy is great. When my battery life dropped, I contacted customer service and they mailed out a new ring the following day. Incredible service.
App Store
This ring has been an absolute game-changer for me. I've had issues sleeping my whole life and have taken every sleeping pill on the planet. Oura's ability to tell EXACTLY how I'm sleeping — light/deep/REM/awake — and give insights on how my activity is helping or hurting my sleep is truly incredible. I'm now completely off all my sleeping pills and overall living a MUCH healthier life!
App Store
Incredible insights into my health. Everyday I get a sense of how I slept, if I should have any concerns regarding my heart rate or spO2, and my energy expenditure. It shows me data like based on other Oura ring users, using the sauna helps improve sleep. As a doctor and fitness professional, I'd love to see insurance companies covering this and patients using this tool.
App Store
I've been impressed by the accuracy of the sleep information and temperature tracking for cycle insights. It is also extremely accurate in detecting times of high stress and even illness — the 'major signs' alert popped up when I got COVID. There are some gripes with battery life and a few missing features, but the core sleep and health tracking is genuinely excellent.
Google Play
Whatever they did, they did a phenomenal job fixing the app. The app works very well overall. My only complaint is that the connection can lag and my Fitbit gives me readings faster. The sleep and HRV data are genuinely insightful when it syncs properly. The stress mode section occasionally shows stress even when I'm relaxing, which needs improvement.
Google Play
Been using my Oura Ring 4 for four months now and the sleep data accuracy has been impressive. My Readiness Score genuinely correlates with how I feel. Love how discreet it is — nobody knows I'm tracking my health. The app UI is clean and the trend charts make it easy to spot patterns. Subscription is fair for the amount of insight you get.
Google Play
The Cycle Insights feature alone makes this worth every penny. The temperature tracking picked up my ovulation window way more accurately than any other app I've tried. Combined with the sleep and readiness tracking, I've learned more about my body in 3 months than in the past decade. The ring is also super comfortable — I forget I'm wearing it.
Google Play
When it worked, it provided useful information on my sleep. The HRV and readiness data is genuinely valuable when the app syncs properly. Unfortunately I experienced persistent sync reliability issues across multiple rings. The insights are excellent when functioning — I just wish the Bluetooth connection was more robust. Support team was responsive when I raised the issue.
Google Play
As a physician I appreciate the evidence base behind Oura's sleep staging algorithms. The HRV tracking is clinically relevant and the illness detection genuinely works — it flagged elevated temperature and resting HR two days before I felt symptoms last winter. Would love to see SpO₂ dip tracking improved. Overall one of the most scientifically grounded consumer wearables available.

Key App Features
Three Daily Scores
Your Sleep, Readiness, and Activity scores give a clear daily snapshot of your body. Each score from 1–100 comes with contributing factors and color-coded status (Optimal 85+, Good 70–84, Pay Attention below 70).
Cardiovascular & Recovery Monitoring
Resting Heart Rate overnight curve with trend analysis
HRV (Heart Rate Variability) — a key stress and recovery biomarker, tracked nightly and averaged over time
Respiratory Rate — measured during sleep, flagging unusual patterns
Blood Oxygen (SpO₂) — average overnight reading and dip detection
Stress Resilience
The app tracks daytime stress using HRV and heart rate data, identifying moments of high strain versus calm and recovery. The Stress section shows your daily stress "load" and suggests restorative moments when stress accumulates.
Illness Detection
By monitoring body temperature shifts and elevations in resting heart rate, Oura can warn you days before you feel sick. Clinical studies, including a COVID-19 study at West Virginia University (2020), showed Oura detected illness signals 2–3 days before symptom onset.
Cycle Insights & Women's Health
For people with menstrual cycles, the app uses nightly body temperature variations to track cycle phases, identify fertile windows, and support natural family planning. Cycle Insights works alongside period tracking and displays monthly temperature trend charts.
Long-Term Trends
View your daily, weekly, and monthly averages to understand how behaviors affect your health over time. The Trends view shows correlations between tags, sleep patterns, and readiness — for example: "On nights after you tag 'caffeine after 2pm,' your sleep score averages 12 points lower."
Tag System & Habit Tracking
Add custom behavioral tags — "alcohol," "late meal," "sauna," "travel," "meditation" — and Oura surfaces statistically significant correlations with your Sleep and Readiness scores after enough data is collected. This lightweight journaling system makes Oura a genuine behavior-change tool, not just a passive tracker.
iOS Widgets
Home screen and lock screen widgets for Readiness, Sleep, and Activity scores, refreshed each time you open the app.
