Fitbit is the official health & fitness app by Google. Track steps, heart rate, sleep, stress, and nutrition. Pair with Fitbit Charge 6, Inspire 3, Sense 2, Versa 4, or Pixel Watch. Upgrade to Fitbit Premium for AI coaching and advanced insights.
The Fitbit app is the official health and fitness companion app developed by Google (formerly Fitbit, Inc.). It tracks daily activity (steps, distance, calories, Active Zone Minutes), heart rate, sleep stages and quality, stress levels, nutrition, weight, and menstrual health. The app works with just your smartphone for basic step and distance tracking, but unlocks full health monitoring features when paired with a Fitbit tracker (Charge 6, Inspire 3, Luxe) or smartwatch (Sense 2, Versa 4, Pixel Watch). It has over 100 million downloads on Google Play and 30+ million monthly active users worldwide.
The Fitbit app is free to download and use. Core features — activity tracking, heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, food logging, and social features — are all free. Fitbit Premium is an optional subscription ($9.99/month or $79.99/year) that adds advanced features: Daily Readiness Score, a full workout video library (HIIT, yoga, Peloton classes), detailed Sleep Profile analysis, Gemini AI health coach, guided meditation sessions, advanced health insights, and personalized recommendations. You can try Premium free for a limited period when you activate a new Fitbit device.
The Fitbit app supports: Fitbit Charge 6 (built-in GPS, ECG, ~7-day battery), Fitbit Charge 5 (GPS, ~7-day battery), Fitbit Inspire 3 (connected GPS, ~10-day battery), Fitbit Luxe (connected GPS, ~5-day battery), Fitbit Sense 2 (GPS, ECG, EDA sensor, ~6-day battery), Fitbit Versa 4 (GPS, ~6-day battery), and Google Pixel Watch 3/4 (GPS, ECG, ~24-hour battery). Note: Google confirmed in 2024 that no new Fitbit Versa or Sense models will be produced — future smartwatch development moves to the Pixel Watch line. Fitbit trackers (Charge, Inspire) continue to be actively developed.
Yes, the Fitbit app works on both platforms. iOS requires version 16.4 or later (iPhone only). Android requires version 10 or later. On Android, the app supports Google Health Connect for data sharing with other health apps. On iOS, Fitbit does NOT natively sync with Apple HealthKit — you need a third-party bridge app (like 'Fitbit to Apple Health Sync') to transfer data between Fitbit and Apple Health. The app supports 18 languages: English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, and Traditional Chinese.
Sync issues are the most common Fitbit complaint. Try these steps in order: (1) Force-close the Fitbit app and reopen it; (2) Toggle Bluetooth off and on in your phone settings; (3) Restart your Fitbit device (press and hold the side button for 8+ seconds); (4) Restart your phone; (5) On Android, disable battery optimization for the Fitbit app (Settings → Apps → Fitbit → Battery → Unrestricted); (6) Check that your Fitbit firmware is up to date; (7) Remove and re-add your device in the app (Settings → your device → Remove This Device, then re-pair). If nothing works, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Fitbit app. The app's sync success rate is approximately 97.8%.
All current Fitbit devices — Charge 6, Charge 5, Inspire 3, Luxe, Sense 2, and Versa 4 — are water-resistant to 50 meters (5 ATM). This means they are safe for swimming in pools and shallow open water, showering, and rain. However, they are NOT designed for scuba diving, water skiing, or high-velocity water activities. The Fitbit app can track pool swimming as a workout mode (counting laps, duration, and calories) on devices with swim tracking support. After swimming, it's recommended to dry the band and let the device air out to avoid skin irritation.
Fitbit sleep tracking uses accelerometer data and heart rate monitoring to detect sleep stages (Light, Deep, REM) and provide a nightly Sleep Score. In clinical studies, Fitbit's sleep staging has shown approximately 70% agreement with polysomnography (the gold standard). For best accuracy: (1) Wear your Fitbit snugly 2–3 cm above the wrist bone; (2) Enable continuous heart rate monitoring; (3) Maintain consistent sleep schedules; (4) Charge your device before bed to avoid interruptions. Fitbit Premium subscribers get access to Sleep Profile, a monthly analysis that classifies your sleep patterns into one of six 'sleep animals' and tracks long-term trends.
The Gemini AI Coach is a Fitbit Premium feature launched in October 2025 (Android, US) and expanded to iOS and additional countries (UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore) in early 2026. Powered by Google's Gemini AI, it acts as a personalized health assistant that analyzes your real-time wearable data to provide: (1) Fitness training — custom workout plans and on-demand exercises; (2) Sleep coaching — sleep pattern analysis with improvement tips; (3) Health & wellness advice — real-time recommendations based on your activity, heart rate, and stress data. Access it via the 'Ask Coach' floating button in the app. Compatible with all Pixel Watch models, Fitbit Charge 5/6, Sense 1/2, Versa 2/3/4, Luxe, and Inspire 3.
Fitbit integrates with several third-party platforms: (1) Strava — GPS activities automatically sync from Fitbit to Strava (enable in Fitbit app → Account → Connected Apps); (2) Google Health Connect (Android) — sync activity, heart rate, and sleep data bi-directionally with Android's Health Connect ecosystem; (3) Google Fit — limited integration available; (4) Apple HealthKit — Fitbit does NOT natively sync with Apple Health. iOS users need a third-party bridge app (like 'Fitbit to Apple Health Sync' or 'Health Sync') to transfer data. (5) Fitbit Web API — developers can access data via OAuth 2.0 RESTful API for custom integrations.
The Fitbit app (developed by Google LLC) collects: (1) Health & fitness data — heart rate, sleep, activity, SpO₂, ECG, stress, menstrual cycles; (2) Personal info — name, email, date of birth, height, weight, gender; (3) Location data — GPS for workout routes and location-based features; (4) Financial info — payment details for Premium subscriptions; (5) Usage data — app interaction analytics and diagnostics. Google has committed that Fitbit health data will NOT be used for Google advertising, with a 10-year data separation enforced under trustee oversight. Users can request full data export or deletion through the app settings. Privacy policy: https://www.fitbit.com/legal/privacy-policy
I've been using Fitbit with Charge 4 for almost 2 years. I pay for the premium version for macro nutrient counting, workouts and mindfulness sessions. The reminders to move my body each hour is helpful. I absolutely love the sleep tracking aspect and comparing how I feel after a nights sleep — the app gives a numerical score based on sleep goals and how long you were in each sleep stage. I'm only giving 4 stars because there is room for improvement.
I love my FitBit Smartwatch! I currently have the Charge 4, this is my 3rd Fitbit. I have been wearing a FitBit basically 24/7 for years. A single charge lasts at least 7–10 days. I was going to buy the latest Apple Watch for the oxygen reading but the Apple Watch will not even stay charged for 24 hours. I will stick with FitBit — a great product for the money.
In May 2020 I wasn't feeling well. My wife and four children gave me a Fitbit for my birthday. I was hospitalized early in June with congestive heart failure and had open heart surgery. During my recovery, I used the Fitbit to watch my heart rate and all the other functions. My resting pulse dropped from 120 bpm to 56–58 bpm! The Fitbit really helped me in my cardiac rehab. Outstanding health device — I'd recommend it to everyone.
Honestly I love Fitbit and have since I was in college. I'm a volleyball player and always have my Fitbit on. The app actually helped save my life twice when my heart rate was notably out of control — it wasn't until I saw that that I told my husband to get me to the hospital. The app has also helped me with tracking calories, weight goals, periods, fertility, sleep and more. I would recommend the Fitbit app over pretty much every other product.
I've been using the Fitbit app for about 3 years now with my Inspire 3. The sleep tracking is by far the best feature — it's what keeps me using Fitbit over switching to Apple Watch. The new redesign looks much better with the Material 3 style. I wish the food database was larger and the social features hadn't been removed (I miss the challenges). Overall solid app for the price.
App seems to be on the back burner, in that maybe they aren't making enough money to justify better updates to the app. Decided to buy premium mostly because I liked the Les Mills workouts but they suddenly disappeared a couple months ago. Food logging could use some polishing up on the search feature. Overall it's a really good tool to help in your fitness journey.
This is my third Fitbit. I really like it because it's small, convenient, and rather easy to use. I can't keep this one synced though. It won't send notifications or text messages and the help articles don't work. I've un-installed the app, turned off Bluetooth, done everything it says to do. But when it does work, the tracking is accurate and the app layout is clean.
Overall, I really like this app for tracking my activities and sleep from my watch. I use MyFitnessPal to track my food, simply because Fitbit doesn't have a good database for it. Syncing between the two has been hit or miss, but much better lately. The major issue I've had is that once every couple of weeks or so, I have to uninstall and reinstall the app in order to get it to function.
Fitbit used to be excellent. I loved my Inspire 2 when it came out. The app is buggy and doesn't track my calories or exercises well. It's basically a glorified step counter. The database for logging food seems smaller than what it was last year. The new daily cardio load part doesn't stay accurate either. The good part about it is the sleep tracking seems pretty accurate.
I have had a few ongoing issues where my logged run shows on my watch and the home screen 1.8 miles and then when I click into the run it says it was 1.9 miles. Also, ever since the crash the other day my calories burned are no longer showing within the food section. I have restarted, installed updates, force closed, cleared cache — everything I've been told. Still not fixed.
