Introduction

Polar Flow is the official free companion app for all Polar smartwatches and fitness devices. Developed by Polar Electro Oy — a Finnish company that invented the world's first wireless heart rate monitor in 1982 — the Polar Flow app transforms raw sensor data into deep, actionable health and performance insights. With over 5 million downloads on Google Play and a 4.6-star rating on the App Store, Polar Flow is one of the most trusted training analysis platforms for serious athletes and everyday fitness users alike.

What Is the Polar Flow App?

Polar Flow is a free sports, fitness, and health companion app that connects to your Polar device via Bluetooth and syncs your workout, activity, and sleep data in real time. Every training session is logged with full detail — heart rate zones, pace, altitude, GPS route, power, and cadence — and displayed in a clean, easy-to-read interface. Beyond workouts, the app provides 24/7 activity tracking, advanced sleep analysis, and recovery metrics that adapt to your personal fitness baseline over 28 days.

The Polar Flow app is available on iOS (17.0+), Android (8.0+), and as a full-featured web service at flow.polar.com — giving you a desktop view of your training diary, reports, and sport profile editor.

How Does Polar Flow Work?

After pairing your Polar device with the app over Bluetooth, every activity, sleep session, and daily movement is synced automatically. The app uses scientifically validated algorithms to process your biometric data and produces five core insight areas:

  1. Training Analysis — Detailed post-workout review with heart rate graphs, training load (TRIMP), GPS route playback, and sport-specific metrics. Running sessions include Running Index — an aerobic fitness score that predicts your race performance times for 5K through marathon.

  2. Sleep Plus Stages™ — Automatic sleep stage detection (light, deep, REM) validated against polysomnography (clinical gold standard). You receive a Sleep Score (1–100) each morning covering amount, solidity, and regeneration.

  3. Nightly Recharge™ — An overnight recovery metric combining your ANS Charge (autonomic nervous system recovery via HRV and breathing rate) and Sleep Charge. After three nights of data, the app delivers personalized daily tips based on your readiness level.

  4. Training Load Pro™ — Tracks your training load across three dimensions: Cardio Load (TRIMP-based), Muscle Load (running and cycling power), and Perceived Load (RPE 1–10). The Cardio Load Status view shows your 14-day strain-to-tolerance ratio.

  5. FitSpark™ Daily Training Guide — Up to four ready-made daily workout suggestions (cardio, strength, supportive) tailored to your fitness level and Nightly Recharge status. Updates after each session, at midnight, and upon waking.

Is Polar Flow Free?

Yes — Polar Flow is completely free to download and use. All core features including training analysis, sleep tracking, Nightly Recharge™, Training Load Pro™, FitSpark™, Running Index, and Strava/Apple Health integration require no subscription or payment. The app does offer optional in-app purchases, but the full scientific coaching experience is available at no cost. This is a key differentiator from competitors like WHOOP ($199–$359/year subscription required).

Key Features of Polar Flow
Activity Tracking

Monitor daily steps, calories burned, distance, and 24/7 continuous heart rate from your wrist. Set personalized daily activity goals and track progress week over week.

Running Index & Running Program

After every GPS run, Polar Flow calculates your Running Index — an aerobic fitness score that improves as your running economy develops. The Polar Running Program (via the web service) generates a free adaptive training plan for 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon based on your current fitness level and adjusts automatically as you progress.

SleepWise™

Uses biomathematical modeling of your recent sleep patterns to predict your daytime alertness windows — showing when you'll be at peak focus and when a nap would help most. Requires five sleep measurements in the last seven days.

Serene™ Guided Breathing

A six-breaths-per-minute guided deep breathing exercise that uses real-time biofeedback to measure heart-breathing synchronization. The watch provides vibration-guided breathing cycles with results shown across three serenity zones.

FuelWise™ Smart Fueling

For endurance athletes: calculates carbohydrate needs mid-workout using Energy Sources data (fat vs. carb utilization), sends smart carb reminders, and tracks hydration intervals during long sessions.

170+ Sport Profiles

Choose from over 170 sport profiles including running, cycling, swimming, strength training, yoga, calisthenics, fitness racing, rucking, and ski machine (added December 2025). Each profile has fully customizable training views and data screens.

Device & Profile Management

Customize your Polar watch face, widgets, notifications, sport profiles, and training targets directly from the app. Manage up to 20 sport profiles on the watch simultaneously (unlimited in the web service).

Polar Flow Integrations

Connecting Polar Flow to Strava is done in one step: go to Settings → Partners in the Flow web service and authorize your Strava account. GPS workouts will then auto-sync to Strava after every training session.

Connecting Polar Flow to Apple Health is configured in the Flow app's General Settings. Synced data includes active energy, heart rate, resting energy, sleep stages, steps, weight, and workout sessions.

Other supported integrations:

  • TrainingPeaks (bidirectional — sessions and training plans)
  • komoot (bidirectional — planned routes and completed tours)
  • Google Fit / Health Connect
  • Adidas Running
  • Nike Run Club, MyFitnessPal

FAQ

What is the Polar Flow app and what does it do?

Polar Flow is the free official companion app for all Polar smartwatches and fitness devices, developed by Polar Electro Oy (Finland). It connects to your Polar watch via Bluetooth and syncs training, sleep, and activity data in real time. The app provides deep workout analysis (heart rate zones, GPS routes, Running Index, Training Load Pro™), advanced sleep tracking (Sleep Plus Stages™), overnight recovery measurement (Nightly Recharge™), a daily training guide (FitSpark™), and integrations with Strava, TrainingPeaks, Apple Health, and komoot. It's also available as a full-featured web service at flow.polar.com with detailed training reports, a coaching platform, and data export tools.

Is Polar Flow free?

Yes — Polar Flow is completely free to download and use. All core features including training analysis, sleep tracking with Sleep Plus Stages™, Nightly Recharge™ recovery measurement, Training Load Pro™, FitSpark™ daily training guide, Running Index, and third-party integrations (Strava, Apple Health, TrainingPeaks) require no subscription or payment. The app does offer optional in-app purchases, but the full scientific coaching experience is accessible at no cost. The Polar Flow web service at flow.polar.com is also free.

How do I connect Polar Flow to Strava?

To connect Polar Flow to Strava: open the Polar Flow web service at flow.polar.com on a computer, click your profile icon in the top right, go to Settings → Partners, and click 'Connect' next to Strava. You'll be redirected to Strava's authorization page — log in and approve the connection. After that, every GPS-enabled workout you sync from your Polar device will automatically appear in Strava. Note: historical activities before the connection require manual export from Polar Flow (TCX format) and upload to Strava.

How do I sync Polar Flow with Apple Health?

To sync Polar Flow with Apple Health: open the Polar Flow app on your iPhone, go to More → General Settings → Apple Health, and enable the toggle. You can choose which data types to share: active energy, heart rate, resting energy, sleep, steps, weight, and workout sessions. Data will sync automatically each time you sync your Polar device with the app. Note: Polar Flow only sends data to Apple Health (one-way sync); Apple Health data is not imported into Polar Flow.

What is Running Index in Polar Flow?

Running Index is an aerobic fitness score calculated automatically after every GPS running session in Polar Flow. It measures your running economy — how efficiently you use oxygen at a given speed — and improves as your fitness develops. The score ranges from 0 to 100+, where 60+ indicates a good recreational runner and 80+ is elite level. Polar Flow also uses your Running Index to predict finishing times for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon distances. You can track your Running Index trend over time through the Polar Flow web service to monitor long-term fitness progress.

What devices are compatible with Polar Flow?

Polar Flow is compatible with all Polar watches and trackers released since 2013. Current compatible models include: Vantage V3, Vantage V2, Vantage V, Vantage M3, Vantage M2, Vantage M; Grit X2 Pro, Grit X2, Grit X Pro, Grit X; Ignite 3, Ignite 2, Ignite; Pacer Pro, Pacer; Unite. Legacy devices: M200, M400, M430, M460, V650, V800, A370, Polar Loop. Heart rate sensors (used with Polar Beat): H10, H9, Verity Sense, OH1. The Polar Flow app requires iOS 17.0+ or Android 8.0+ with Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE). Some older devices (M400, V650) need initial setup via the Flow web service on a computer.

Why is my Polar Flow not syncing?

Common fixes for Polar Flow sync issues: (1) Clear the app cache: go to your phone Settings → Apps → Polar Flow → Storage → Clear Cache. (2) Restart both your phone and Polar device. (3) Ensure Bluetooth is enabled and your Polar device is within 10 meters of your phone. (4) Check that Polar Flow has location permission set to 'Allow All the Time' on Android (required for GPS tracking in the background). (5) Uninstall and reinstall the Polar Flow app. (6) If syncing to Strava fails, go to flow.polar.com → Settings → Partners and re-authorize the Strava connection. If issues persist, contact Polar support at support.polar.com.

What is the difference between Polar Flow and Polar Beat?

Polar Flow and Polar Beat serve different use cases. Polar Flow is the full companion app for Polar watches — it requires a paired Polar device (Vantage, Ignite, Grit X, etc.) and provides deep analysis including sleep tracking, Nightly Recharge™, Training Load Pro™, running programs, and FitSpark™. Polar Beat is a standalone workout recording app that works without a Polar watch — you can use it with just a Polar heart rate sensor (H10, H9, Verity Sense) or even your phone's camera. Polar Beat focuses on real-time workout recording and does not offer sleep tracking or long-term recovery analysis. If you own a Polar watch, use Polar Flow. If you only have a heart rate sensor and want to record sessions from your phone, use Polar Beat.

What is Nightly Recharge™ in Polar Flow?

Nightly Recharge™ is Polar Flow's overnight recovery measurement that combines two scores: (1) ANS Charge — measures how well your autonomic nervous system calmed down during the first hours of sleep, based on heart rate, HRV (RMSSD), and breathing rate compared to your personal 28-day baseline; and (2) Sleep Charge — evaluates the amount and quality of your sleep based on Sleep Plus Stages™ data. Nightly Recharge requires at least three consecutive nights of data to establish your baseline. Based on your result each morning, the app gives personalized daily tips: whether to train hard, take it easy, or prioritize rest. The feature is available on Polar Vantage, Grit X, Ignite, Pacer, and Pacer Pro series.

How do I use Polar Flow for Coach?

Polar Flow for Coach is a free coaching platform at flow.polar.com/coach. To use it as a coach: create a free Polar account, go to flow.polar.com/coach and set up your coach profile. You can then invite athletes by sending them an invitation link — athletes need their own Polar Flow account to accept. Once connected, you can view each athlete's training data (workouts, sleep, recovery, training load), create individualized training plans and seasonal periodization, and monitor multiple athletes simultaneously. Athletes can group themselves into teams. All current Polar watches are compatible with the coaching platform.

Can Polar Flow export data to other platforms?

Yes. Polar Flow offers multiple data export options: (1) TCX export — download individual training sessions in TCX format from the Polar Flow web service for upload to platforms like Garmin Connect or other tools. (2) HRV CSV export — export heart rate variability data as a CSV file from the web service. (3) Full data download — go to account.polar.com to download all your personal data in JSON/XML format. (4) Polar AccessLink API v3 — developers can build custom integrations at admin.polaraccesslink.com using OAuth2. (5) Native integrations automatically sync to Strava, TrainingPeaks (bidirectional), Apple Health, Health Connect, komoot, and Adidas Running.

I have used Polar Flow with my Vantage M for the last two and a half years. I really enjoy seeing the heart rate graphs for each workout and how they compare to previous workouts. Polar Flow also shows you a graph of how much 'strain' you can take based off your last seven days and your average strain over the last month. With Polar Flow I can easily see if I have been consistent or falling off in intensity and duration. It's detailed enough that I can nerd out, or just feel guilty for too many 'recovery' days. The Polar program really shines when it comes to running. Great in-app maps, pace counts, and detailed analysis on the supporting website. Very accurate prediction for future running performance.

My Vantage M and the Polar app have some great features. I like seeing my progress and the ability to gauge overreaching mixed with poor sleep. I enjoy the sport profiles and being able to set heart rate monitored activities. I do have a small wish list: the app needs to be restarted every time to sync; there's no 'find your phone' option; no Zwift compatibility means I need a separate heart rate strap for those sessions. Compatibility with more third-party apps and platforms would be great. I have really enjoyed the watch, however — these are improvements I'd love to see.

It works, and eventually does everything you need it to do, but it has some annoying features. If you're not doing heart rate based training, you're constantly having to change the defaults, or else risk having the watch beep at you throughout your run. It would be nice to have Running Index and recovery state in the app itself, but they're only available through the web service. On the plus side, it works, and after learning all the quirks and going back-and-forth between the app and the web service, it is eventually customizable for everything I need to do.

I like most things about the App and my Polar Vantage M. However there are two areas needing significant improvement: the delay in displaying heart rate makes it easy to overshoot my target zone during exercise, and the sleep tracking misidentifies wake periods during the night. Despite these issues, the training analysis and running performance tools are genuinely excellent. The heart rate zone summaries and workout comparisons are detailed and useful.

I have the Polar Grit X Pro. The app occasionally shows sync errors but the data does come through. Polar does have good metrics of how much carbs and fats you burned which is cool. The sleep tracking and nightly recharge features are the main reason I stick with Polar — no other app at this price gives you this level of recovery insight for free. Would love to see a more modern UI redesign and better workout comparison tools.

While not the most user-friendly experience, the app works. NOTE: If using it to track a walk or run, you MUST give it location access AT ALL TIMES, not just when it's in use. (Strange choice, Polar.) I will say that I appreciate being able to receive zone feedback during runs. It isn't perfect, but it's free, and it's better than I initially thought.

Seems to work well with one exception. It requires location permission all the time even when you aren't using the app or it won't track your distance. I have several other apps that use location but only require the permission setting when the app is in use. The training data and sleep analysis are genuinely useful — Nightly Recharge in particular gives me actionable morning guidance. The core features that matter work reliably.

Been using Polar Flow with my Vantage V2 for over a year. The training load analysis is the best I've found at this price point — being able to see cardio load vs. muscle load separately is incredibly useful for planning recovery days. The web service is far more detailed than the app, which is great for deep analysis after long runs. Sync to Strava works flawlessly.

SleepData_Fan

The sleep analysis in Polar Flow is genuinely outstanding for a free app. The Sleep Plus Stages breakdown and Nightly Recharge score have changed how I think about training — I now take recovery days seriously based on the data. The FitSpark workout suggestions are useful too. Main downside is the Android app stability, which needs work. But the core health insights are excellent.

MarathonTrainer_UK

The running analysis features in Polar Flow are solid. Running Index tracks my fitness progress well and the race time predictions are reasonably accurate. The free Running Program via the web service is a hidden gem — it's a full adaptive training plan for free. App could use a UI refresh and better offline functionality. Overall though, for a free app that pairs with a premium watch, it delivers real value.
