Introduction
Suunto is the official companion app for the entire lineup of Suunto smartwatches and sports watches. With over 1 million downloads on Google Play, a 4.2-star rating on Android, and a 4.0-star rating on the App Store, the Suunto app is the central hub for athletes and outdoor adventurers who rely on Suunto Race, Suunto Vertical, Suunto 9 Peak Pro, and other Suunto devices. Whether you're a competitive runner, trail runner, triathlete, cyclist, hiker, or diver, the Suunto app connects your Suunto watch to a comprehensive platform for health, training, and navigation.
What Is the Suunto App?
The Suunto application (Android package: com.stt.android.suunto, App Store ID: 1230327951) transforms your Suunto smartwatch data into actionable insights. Developed by Amer Sports Digital Services Oy — a subsidiary of Liesheng Group that acquired Suunto from Amer Sports in 2022 — the app continues Suunto's 90-year heritage of precision instruments, now digitized for the modern athlete.
Once you pair your Suunto watch via Bluetooth, the app automatically syncs every workout, sleep session, and health metric. You can then analyze trends, review route maps, customize sport modes, download SuuntoPlus apps, and share your progress with the Suunto community.
Key Features of the Suunto App
Training Analytics — TSS, CTL, ATL & TSB
The Suunto app delivers professional-grade training load analysis previously available only to elite coaches:
TSS (Training Stress Score) — quantifies the physiological cost of each workout combining intensity and duration
CTL (Chronic Training Load) — your "fitness" metric showing long-term training adaptation over 42 days

Platform SupportAndroid, iOS, iPadOS, Web Route Planner (routeplanner.suunto.com)
The Suunto app is the official free companion app for all Suunto smartwatches and sports watches, including the Suunto Race, Race S, Race 2, Suunto Vertical, Suunto 9 Peak Pro, Suunto 5, and legacy devices like the Ambit3 and Spartan series. The app syncs workout data, health metrics, sleep tracking, and navigation from your Suunto watch and displays it on your phone. It also offers training load analytics (TSS/CTL/ATL/TSB), an AI Coach, the SuuntoPlus app ecosystem, and the Suunto Web Route Planner for planning GPS routes with heatmaps.
Is the Suunto app free?
Yes, the Suunto app is completely free to download and use. Unlike Garmin Connect (which has an optional Connect+ subscription at $6.99/month), Suunto includes all training analytics — including TSS, CTL, ATL, TSB, AI Coach recommendations, ZoneSense, and route planning — at no charge. There are no premium tiers or paywalled features in the Suunto app as of 2026.
Can Suunto connect to Strava?
Yes. Suunto has a native Strava integration that automatically uploads your workouts to Strava after each activity is completed. To connect: open the Suunto app → tap Profile (bottom right) → Connected Services → Strava → tap Connect and follow the authorization flow. Once connected, every activity recorded on your Suunto watch will appear in your Strava feed automatically, typically within a few minutes of ending the workout.
Can Suunto connect to Apple Health?
Yes. The Suunto app integrates with Apple Health on iOS. To enable the connection: open the Suunto app → Profile → Connected Services → Apple Health → tap Allow. Once enabled, the Suunto app will send your workout data, heart rate, step count, and sleep data to the Apple Health app, so all your fitness information is consolidated in one place on your iPhone.
Are Suunto watches compatible with iPhone?
Yes, Suunto watches are fully compatible with iPhone. The Suunto app requires iOS 16.6 or later and is available on the App Store. Suunto watches connect to iPhone via Bluetooth (BLE 4.0). All core features — workout sync, GPS route viewing, sleep tracking, training analytics, notifications, and SuuntoPlus app downloads — work on both iPhone and Android.
What is ZoneSense in the Suunto app?
ZoneSense is Suunto's proprietary real-time HRV (heart rate variability) training zone guidance feature, available on select Suunto watches including the Suunto Race and Suunto Vertical. Unlike traditional heart rate zones that are based purely on beats per minute, ZoneSense analyzes your HRV during the workout to detect your actual physiological stress response — showing whether you're truly in an aerobic, threshold, or high-intensity state. This allows more accurate zone training without the overestimation issues that come from cardiac drift or caffeine use. ZoneSense data is displayed on your watch during the workout and reviewed in the Suunto app afterward.
What is Suunto Coach?
Suunto Coach is the AI-powered training recommendation engine built into the Suunto app. It analyzes your training history, current fitness level (CTL), recent fatigue (ATL), training stress balance (TSB), sleep quality, and upcoming goals to suggest the right workout for each day — whether a recovery jog, a tempo run, a long aerobic ride, or a rest day. Suunto Coach adapts as your fitness evolves and becomes more accurate the more data your Suunto watch collects over time.
How do I add SuuntoPlus apps to my watch?
To add SuuntoPlus apps to your Suunto watch: open the Suunto app → tap on your watch icon → SuuntoPlus → Browse Available Apps. Select the app you want (e.g., a TrainingPeaks power field, a Swimeraze swim tracker, or a guided endurance workout) and tap Install. The app will sync to your watch the next time it connects via Bluetooth. Note that SuuntoPlus app availability depends on your watch model — newer devices like Suunto Race 2 and Suunto Vertical support a wider selection.
Can I plan running routes in the Suunto app?
Yes, Suunto offers the Web Route Planner at routeplanner.suunto.com, which provides a full-featured desktop experience for planning GPS routes. Key features include a heatmap layer (showing popular running, cycling, and hiking routes used by the Suunto community), elevation profiles, and the ability to save routes and sync them directly to your Suunto watch for turn-by-turn guidance. You can also import GPX routes from other platforms. On the Suunto app mobile, you can view saved routes and send them to your watch.
Does Suunto track sleep?
Yes. Suunto watches with wrist heart rate sensors automatically track sleep when worn overnight, recording total sleep time and sleep stages (light, deep, and REM sleep). The Suunto app displays your nightly sleep duration, sleep stage breakdown, and a body resources score that reflects how well you recovered overnight. Sleep data is also factored into Suunto Coach's daily training recommendations — if you had poor sleep, the coach may suggest a lighter workout or rest day.

UPDATE. 09 AUGUST 2019: Since my last review the app has been working flawlessly. It tracks and auto syncs almost immediately after I've ended the workout session. Still not happy about not having an Apple Watch or iPhone complication option but it seems like this is being developed as well. Great improvement Suunto — keep up the good work! The hardware is phenomenal and the app is finally catching up.

Feb 10, 2026 (Android): Thanks for using the Suunto app and being a part of the Suunto community. We are updating the app regularly to provide the best possible experience. Keep your app updated to ensure you have the latest features and best app performance.
I really want to love this app. Movescount worked but I (and I suspect most of us) only ever used it to set up my watch faces and relay my moves to Strava. I love most of the immediate features of the Suunto app, a lot. The dashboard is clean, the activity summaries are detailed, and the training load charts are genuinely useful. Two issues bump this from 5 stars: background sync reliability and the lack of a desktop companion. The hardware is great — I just hope the software keeps catching up.
App Store
I've been a Suunto user for 6 years and the app has improved substantially. The training load metrics (CTL/ATL/TSB) are as good as what you'd get in TrainingPeaks, and they're completely free. The route planner with heatmaps is excellent for finding new trails — I've discovered several local routes I never knew existed. ZoneSense during runs is genuinely useful; it actually caught me going too hard on what should have been an easy day. My wish: a better web/desktop client to complement the mobile experience.
Google Play
It's a good app for what it does, but it has some quirks, such as getting structured workouts synced to the watch. Occasionally, the workout won't sync, despite frequent manual syncing over and over. Also, the fact that it doesn't have a dark mode in 2025 is very unfortunate. Although not mobile app specific, but the lack of a web or desktop client to accompany the mobile app is also a real shame. Suunto has always had phenomenal hardware, but lagged behind the competition with software.
Google Play
The TSS/CTL/ATL tracking in this app is what keeps me on Suunto. I pay for TrainingPeaks Premium on my cycling side, and the Suunto app gives me equivalent training load analytics for running completely free. The Strava integration is rock-solid — every run uploads automatically within 30 seconds of finishing. Suunto Coach has become noticeably better in the past year; the recovery recommendations are accurate and it actually adapts when I deviate from the suggested plan. Docking one star for the absence of a desktop web app.
Google Play
The route planning and offline maps are the reason I chose Suunto over Garmin. The heatmap layer in the web route planner is fantastic for finding popular hiking and trail running routes when traveling. Once you save the route, it syncs to the watch reliably. Navigation on the watch is excellent — breadcrumb trail plus turn-by-turn works well even in forests without cell signal. The app is solid for tracking training load and recovery. I'd give 5 stars if the mobile app had a route planning interface too, rather than requiring the desktop browser.
Google Play
Suunto Race is excellent hardware and the app does the basics well — activity sync, training load, sleep tracking. What I appreciate most is ZoneSense; for heart rate-based training it's more accurate than simple HR zone ranges. The dive integration with Suunto Ocean is seamless — I can review my dives and runs side-by-side. My main criticism: the app needs a proper web interface. Managing training plans, reviewing detailed route analytics, and exporting data all feel limited on a small screen. Garmin's ecosystem is more mature on the software side, but Suunto's hardware and ZoneSense keep me here.
CompatibilityRequires iOS 16.6 or later. Compatible with iPhone and iPad. Android 6.0+. Web Route Planner available at routeplanner.suunto.com.

ATL (Acute Training Load) — your recent "fatigue" over a 7-day window
TSB (Training Stress Balance) — the difference between CTL and ATL; positive values indicate freshness, negative values indicate accumulated fatigue
These metrics, normally found only in coaching platforms like TrainingPeaks, are built directly into the Suunto app and are available free of charge.
Suunto Coach — AI-Powered Training Guidance
Suunto Coach provides personalized training recommendations based on your fitness level, training history, and performance trends. The AI analyzes your recent workouts, recovery status, and upcoming goals to suggest daily training actions — whether that means a recovery run, an easy aerobic session, or a rest day.
ZoneSense™ — Real-Time HRV Zone Guidance
ZoneSense is one of Suunto's most innovative features. It uses real-time heart rate variability (HRV) analysis during workouts to tell you exactly which training zone your body is actually working in — not just where your heart rate number falls. This distinction is crucial: two athletes with the same heart rate can be in completely different physiological zones based on their HRV signature. ZoneSense helps you avoid training too hard on recovery days and ensures you hit the right intensity during quality sessions.
Route Planning & Navigation
The Suunto Web Route Planner (available at routeplanner.suunto.com) offers a desktop-class route planning experience:
Heatmap overlay — see where thousands of other athletes run, cycle, and hike in your area
Elevation profiles — preview climbs before you tackle them
Point of interest routing — plan routes through trails, viewpoints, and waypoints
Offline maps — download maps to your Suunto Race, Vertical, or 9 Peak Pro for GPS navigation without a phone connection
Routes created on the web planner sync directly to your Suunto watch through the app.
SuuntoPlus™ — Apps, Sport Modes & Watch Faces
SuuntoPlus is Suunto's open platform that lets you extend your watch's capabilities:
SuuntoPlus Sport Apps — third-party apps from partners like TrainingPeaks, Noson, Swimeraze, and others that run natively on your Suunto watch
SuuntoPlus Guides — step-by-step in-workout coaching from brand partners including Vitality, Zone2Training, and 80/20 Endurance
Watch Face Gallery — downloadable watch faces with custom data fields, available from the SuuntoPlus store in the app
115+ Sport Modes
The Suunto app supports customizing 115+ sport modes including running, trail running, cycling, swimming, open water swimming, triathlon, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, strength training, yoga, pilates, hiking, mountaineering, rowing, paddleboarding, diving, and many more. Each sport mode can have custom data screens with the metrics that matter for that discipline.
Daily Wellness Tracking
In addition to training analytics, the Suunto app tracks your full health picture:
Sleep tracking — sleep duration, stages, and nightly recovery
Step counting — daily steps and distance
Heart rate — continuous all-day monitoring
Stress & body resources — tracking physical and mental stress levels
Calories — active and resting calorie burn
