Introduction
WHOOP is a subscription-based wearable health and fitness platform built around a screen-free band designed for 24/7 wear. Unlike traditional smartwatches, the WHOOP band has no screen — all insights are delivered through the WHOOP app, which turns continuous biometric data into actionable daily recommendations for Recovery, Strain, Sleep, Stress, and long-term Healthspan.
Founded in 2012 by Will Ahmed at Harvard, WHOOP has grown from an elite sports tool used by LeBron James and Michael Phelps into a mainstream health platform with over 1.5 million paying members across 56 countries. The company is valued at approximately $3.2 billion and ships three hardware tiers: WHOOP 4.0, WHOOP 5.0, and the medical-grade WHOOP MG with FDA-cleared ECG.
How Does the WHOOP App Work?
The WHOOP app is the command center for all WHOOP wearables. The band captures 26 data points per second — heart rate, HRV, blood oxygen (SpO₂), skin temperature, respiratory rate, and motion — then syncs wirelessly to the app, where proprietary algorithms transform raw sensor data into five core pillars:
Recovery Score (0–100%) — a daily readiness metric based on HRV, resting heart rate, sleep quality, and respiratory rate. Green (67–99%) means you're primed for high strain; yellow (34–66%) suggests moderate activity; red (0–33%) signals rest is needed.
Strain Score (0–21) — measures cardiovascular and muscular exertion throughout the day. The Strain Target feature recommends an optimal activity level based on your Recovery, showing strain building in real time during workouts.
Sleep Performance — tracks sleep stages (deep, light, REM, awake), sleep consistency, sleep efficiency, and cumulative sleep debt. Bedtime recommendations appear after 3 nights of data, and a haptic alarm wakes you with vibration at the optimal point in your sleep cycle.
Stress Monitor (0–3) — provides real-time stress scoring using HRV and heart rate data, with guided breathwork sessions to help manage stress levels.
Healthspan & WHOOP Age — developed with the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, this longevity feature calculates your physiological age based on nine biomarkers over 6 months and shows a dynamic "Pace of Aging" score.
WHOOP is a subscription-based health and fitness platform that pairs a screen-free wearable band with a companion app. The band captures 26 data points per second — including heart rate, HRV, blood oxygen (SpO₂), skin temperature, and motion — and syncs to the WHOOP app over Bluetooth. The app processes this data into five core metrics: Recovery (0–100%), Strain (0–21), Sleep Performance, Stress (0–3), and Healthspan. WHOOP uses these insights to provide personalized coaching recommendations for training, sleep, and daily behaviors. A paid subscription ($199–$359/year) is required, and the wearable hardware is included with the membership.
Is WHOOP worth it?
Whether WHOOP is worth it depends on your goals. WHOOP excels at recovery-based training optimization, sleep analysis, and long-term health tracking — peer-reviewed research shows members increase exercise by 90+ minutes per week, gain 2+ hours of extra sleep, and improve HRV by 10%. It's best suited for serious athletes, CrossFit enthusiasts, and health-conscious individuals who want data-driven insights without the distraction of a smartwatch screen. However, WHOOP requires an ongoing subscription ($199–$359/year), has no screen or GPS, and cannot display notifications or run standalone apps. If you want a general-purpose smartwatch with apps, notifications, and GPS, an Apple Watch or Garmin may be better value. If you prioritize recovery and sleep optimization, WHOOP is among the best in class.
How much does a WHOOP subscription cost?
WHOOP offers three membership tiers: WHOOP One at $199/year (includes certified pre-owned WHOOP 4.0), WHOOP Peak at $239/year (includes WHOOP 5.0), and WHOOP Life at $359/year (includes WHOOP MG with FDA-cleared ECG). Family plans are available for 2–6 members at reduced per-person pricing ($149–$323/person depending on tier). New members can try a 1-month free trial of Peak membership with a pre-owned WHOOP 5.0. There is no option to use WHOOP without a subscription — the band requires an active membership to function.
Is the WHOOP band waterproof?
Yes, WHOOP 5.0, WHOOP MG, and WHOOP 4.0 are all waterproof. You can wear your WHOOP in the shower, pool, and ocean. The device is designed for 24/7 wear including water-based activities. The Wireless PowerPack charger is also waterproof, allowing you to charge on the go without removing the band. For swimming workouts, WHOOP will auto-detect the activity and track your strain, heart rate, and calories.
Does WHOOP track steps?
Yes. Steps tracking came out of beta with WHOOP 5.0 and now provides enhanced accuracy. Your daily step count is displayed in the WHOOP app alongside your other health metrics. Steps are also one of the nine biomarkers used in the Healthspan/WHOOP Age longevity calculation. However, unlike most smartwatches, there is no step counter visible on the device itself since WHOOP has no screen — you must check steps through the app.
Can WHOOP measure blood pressure?
WHOOP Life members (WHOOP MG device) have access to Blood Pressure Insights (BPI), a beta feature that uses patent-pending optical sensor technology to estimate overnight systolic and diastolic blood pressure ranges. This feature is not a traditional blood pressure cuff measurement — it analyzes heart rate, HRV, blood flow patterns, and demographic data through algorithms. Note: The FDA issued a Warning Letter in July 2025 regarding this feature, stating it constitutes an unapproved medical device. WHOOP disagrees and maintains the feature qualifies as general wellness technology. BPI unlocks after 14 nights of data.
Can WHOOP detect sleep apnea?
WHOOP does not directly diagnose sleep apnea. However, the Health Monitor tracks blood oxygen (SpO₂) and respiratory rate during sleep, which can indicate patterns associated with sleep-disordered breathing. Low or fluctuating overnight SpO₂ readings flagged by WHOOP may prompt you to consult a healthcare professional for formal sleep apnea testing. The downloadable Health Report (30-day or 180-day PDF) can be shared with your doctor for further evaluation.
How do I cancel my WHOOP membership?
To cancel your WHOOP membership: open the WHOOP app, go to your Profile, tap Account, then select Membership. From there you can manage or cancel your subscription. Note that WHOOP memberships are annual commitments — if you cancel mid-term, your membership remains active until the end of the current billing period. You will not receive a prorated refund for unused months. After cancellation, your WHOOP band will stop syncing new data, though you can still view your historical data in the app.
WHOOP vs Oura Ring — which is better?
WHOOP and Oura target different use cases. WHOOP (band form factor) excels at real-time strain tracking during workouts, recovery-based training optimization, and active coaching — it's built for athletes who train daily. Oura Ring (ring form factor) excels at sleep tracking, readiness scores, and all-day wear comfort with a more discreet design. Key differences: WHOOP has no GPS or screen but offers deeper strain analysis (0–21 scale), AI coaching, and 145+ activity modes. Oura has a lower subscription cost ($5.99/month vs $199+/year). WHOOP requires a subscription for any functionality; Oura works with basic features without one. Choose WHOOP for performance training; choose Oura for sleep-first wellness.
Can WHOOP connect to Apple Health and Strava?
Yes. WHOOP natively syncs with Apple Health, Strava, and TrainingPeaks. Data shared includes workouts, heart rate, sleep, and recovery metrics. To enable syncing, open the WHOOP app, go to Profile → App Settings → Connected Apps, and toggle on the integrations you want. WHOOP also offers a Developer Platform with OAuth2 API access for third-party integrations.

The data this product provides is invaluable for athletic performance. The recovery score alone has changed how I train. Sleep tracking is spot on and the strain coach keeps me from overtraining. It's the golden ticket for many serious athletes.

Recent app malfunctions block utilization. App settings tab redirects to profile. Support offers zero follow-up. The core data is excellent when it works, but the Android experience needs significant improvement.
App Store
Good software and intuitive app, but sensor is finicky during dynamic movements and less accurate than competitors during certain exercises. Sleep and recovery data are the real strengths of this platform.
App Store
Performance game changer but recent Bluetooth disconnects mid-workout and delayed heart rate updates frustrate usage. When connected and working properly, the insights are genuinely helpful for planning my training days.
App Store
The women's hormonal insights feature is incredible. It tracks how my cycle affects my recovery and sleep — something no other wearable does this well. The WHOOP Coach AI gives me personalized advice that actually makes sense. Worth every penny.
Google Play
Been using WHOOP for 2 years now and it's completely changed how I approach training and recovery. The strain coach is incredibly accurate and the sleep tracking is the best I've tried. The 5.0 hardware is a big upgrade — battery lasts 2+ weeks easily.
Google Play
Great recovery and strain data. I rely on the green/yellow/red recovery score every morning to decide my training intensity. Only knock is no GPS — I still need my phone for run mapping. Otherwise, the app is well-designed and the data visualizations are excellent.
Google Play
Love the journal feature — I can track how different supplements and habits affect my recovery score over time. The Healthspan feature is fascinating too. Deducting one star because the app can be slow to sync sometimes on Android.
Google Play
As a CrossFit athlete, WHOOP is essential. The strain tracking during workouts is unmatched, and the recovery recommendations help me avoid overtraining. The AI coach gives solid answers about my physiology. Best fitness investment I've made.
Google Play
The data quality is excellent, but the subscription model is expensive. I wish there was a monthly option or a cheaper tier with basic features. The app itself is polished and the insights are actionable — just wish it was more accessible price-wise.
Family plans are available for 2–6 members at reduced per-person pricing. New members can try a 1-month free trial of Peak membership with a certified pre-owned WHOOP 5.0.
WHOOP 5.0 & WHOOP MG Hardware
WHOOP 5.0 weighs just 28g, is 7% smaller than the 4.0, delivers 14+ days of battery life, and features a 60% faster processor that is 10x more power efficient. It captures data 26 times per second and is waterproof with no screen — intentionally designed to eliminate distractions.
WHOOP MG (Medical Grade) adds an FDA-cleared ECG for on-demand electrocardiogram readings, Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) detection, and Blood Pressure Insights (beta) using patent-pending optical sensor technology. ECG is available in 40+ countries.
Both devices can be worn on the wrist, bicep, or integrated into WHOOP Body Smart Apparel (sports bras, compression tops, leggings) for off-wrist tracking via the Any-Wear™ Pod system.

Who Is WHOOP For?
WHOOP is used by professional athletes (NFL, PGA Tour, WTA, CrossFit), Fortune 500 executives, military personnel, and health-conscious consumers. Notable ambassadors include LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Patrick Mahomes, and Rory McIlroy. The company partners with the PGA Tour (through 2028), NFLPA, WTA, CrossFit, and NASCAR.
Note: WHOOP requires an active subscription to access app features. The wearable cannot function independently without the membership. This is a key consideration when evaluating whether WHOOP is worth it for your use case.
